The Allied Pilots Association, a union for American's pilots, estimated Wednesday that 15,000 flights from December 17 through December 31 lacked sufficient crew. "As a result, thousands of flights now do not have pilots assigned to fly them during the upcoming critical holiday period", the Allied Pilots Association (APA) that represents American's pilots said in a message to members via its website.

The airline said that "only a few hundred" flights out of 200,000 scheduled for next month don't have pilots assigned to them, after a scheduling platform glitch allowed too many pilots to take vacation during the busy holiday travel period in late December.

"The system went from responsibly scheduling everybody to becoming Santa Claus to everyone", one pilot told CNBC, a news channel.

'The computer said, 'Hey ya'll.

Pilots found out about the error on Friday and many have since been offered time-and-a-half to work over the Christmas period. "You got it." The airline is scrambling to fix the problem and says it does not expect any cancellations. "W$3 e have more reserve pilots on hand in December than normal months and they provide us with the ability to fly numerous trips that are now uncovered", the company stated.

"Today, management issued an update detailing the 'significant holes" in the operation and unilaterally invoked a solution for crewing affected flights.

"This is a potential crisis that we see well in advance", Capt. Dennis Tajer, a spokesman for the union, said to The Associated Press. As a result, the pilots' union estimates that 15,000 of the airline's flights between December 17th and the end of the year have not yet been allocated a pilot.

American declined to confirm the number of flights initially affected, but spokesman Miller said the company was doing everything it could to get the staffing situation resolved.

The glitch caused the scheduling system to show that American had ample staffing coverage for some planned flights when it actually didn't.
