Unidentified North Korea Man Washed Up Dead On Japan Coast

A wooden boat washed ashore in northern Japan carrying eight men claiming to be fishermen from North Korea taken on Nov. 24 2017

Police found the eight men on a marina in the city of Yurihonjo, after they received a call from a local resident late Thursday, broadcaster NHK reported.

Police said the men were in good health and spoke Korean.

Last week, the Coast Guard rescued three North Korean men on a capsized boat in the Sea of Japan who said they were fishermen and were later sent home aboard a North Korean vessel. The group of men was reported for being "suspicious" as they stood before the oceanfront, but they were later taken into custody without aid.

Police were not available to make any further comment.

Japan's Coast Guard found the body of a male and parts of a wooden boat suspected to be from North Korea on the coast of one of Japan's outlying islands on Saturday, an official said, Asahi Shimbun writes. They identified themselves as North Koreans who were fishing before the boat broke down and washed ashore.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said at a news conference on Friday that the government will "respond appropriately". They were later transferred to another North Korean vessel.

Japan's Coast Guard found a dead man Saturday along the oceanfront of Sado island that is surmised to be from Korea. According to the Japan Coast Guard, 43 wooden boats have been discovered in Japanese waters this year alone, including a number of badly damaged vessels.
