DOJ Charges Former Iranian Military Hacker in HBO Data Theft

HBO's 'Game of Thrones' hacker hit with charges in the US

The hacker gradually released stolen materials on the internet, including unaired episodes of "Ballers", "Barry", "Room 104", "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "The Deuce".

Behzad Mesri was charged with conducting the high-profile attack in which hackers over the summer demanded $6 million from the channel before leaking unreleased episodes of HBO's top-rated shows, including "Game of Thrones".

A government spokesman said Mesri, who prosecutors say had previously hacked computer systems for the Iranian military, is not in custody at this time.

NBC News reports Acting U.S. Attorney Joon Kim said there will be "real consequences" for Mesri.

Behzad Mesri, an Iran-based hacker, allegedly hacked into HBO servers in May, stole confidential company data over the course of several months, and then attempted to extort HBO for $6 million in Bitcoin, according to the indictment released by US prosecutors in Manhattan Tuesday morning. "HBO is hacked.Beware of heart attacks".

They were released on bail early November 8 and had been staying at a lakeside hotel in Hangzhou prior to flying home. When you gonna get suspended, mother f**ker? "Should have gotten his son out during my next trip to China instead".

"HBO has confirmed in the past that we were working with law enforcement from the early stages of the cyber incident".

Behzad Mesri is believed to still be in Iran but the charges send a message to everyone who attacks US targets, said officials.

They also said he was a member of the Iranian-based Turk Black Hat Security hacking group, targeting hundreds of websites in the United States and around the world.

Mesri allegedly stole the information by compromising user accounts belonging to multiple HBO employees and gaining access to the company's systems. He allegedly orchestrated a hacking scheme in an attempt to extort the company for $6 million worth of bitcoin. In July, authorities say he contacted HBO executives via email, demanding $5.5 million in Bitcoin if the company wanted to prevent any leaks.

In a statement in August, HBO said that was not communicating with the hacker. We can only guess that he will not be rushing to turn himself in, and if his alleged past work with the Iranian government is true, we don't think the authorities there will be to eager to see him in a USA courtroom.
