Twitter suspends 'broken' verification scheme after complaints of verifying right-wing individuals' accounts

Twitter verification is temporarily on hold

Twitter is pausing all "general verifications" after receiving criticism for verifying the man behind the deadly Charlottesville rally in August.

Dorsey retweeted the message from @TwitterSupport, providing a bit more information about the decision. Kessler's own Twitter account isn't lacking in exactly the terrible behavior Twitter claims to be trying to stamp out, which puts his verification seemingly at odds with the company's past actions.

"We recognize that we have created this confusion and need to resolve it", Twitter explained on Thursday. "I must be the only working class white advocate with that distinction".

But Twitter's verification system has also become a status symbol over the years, in part because the group of verified users on Twitter is a very small portion of the overall user base.

Additionally, Ed Ho, general manager of Twitter's Consumer Product tweeted that the company has known that the verification process was "busted". "Verifying Jason Kessler is a political act - and one that puts you on the wrong side of history".

In an earlier article covering the topic, we noted that Twitter meant to take a look at how it verified public figures.

"Heather Heyer was a fat disgusting Communist", Kessler tweeted.

Kessler, whose account was still verified as of Thursday afternoon, did not respond to requests for comment.

Meanwhile, it does not appear Kessler's verification was an oversight as the account still now shows a blue check mark.

The move to verify Kessler's account comes after Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter, had recently said the service was planning to toughen rules on hate speech then take on its verification policy.

Today, Twitter's support account said that the company won't hand out new verifications to users.

"And we failed by not doing anything about it", he added.

The company says the suspension is only temporary, and that it is working on a fix.

More recently, an applications process was opened up by which accounts could state why they might justify verification, expanding massively the range of people who could potentially be verified.
