Alabama GOP US Senate Candidate Accused of Groping Teen Decades Ago

U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore speaks to students at American Christian Academy in Tuscaloosa

"So it is no surprise, with just over four weeks remaining, in a race for the US Senate with national implications, that the Democratic Party and the country's most liberal newspaper would come up with a fabrication of this kind".

UPDATE: Senators Susan Collins, Mike Lee, and Steve Daines are also distancing themselves from Moore and calling on him to step down "if the allegations are true".

The Washington Post story also quoted three other women who said Moore dated them when they were between 16 and 18 years old and he was in his early 30s, though none said they had sexual contact with Moore.

"If these allegations are true, he must step aside", McConnell said Thursday.

"These allegations are completely false and are a desperate political attack by the National Democrat Party and the Washington Post on this campaign", Moore said in a statement.

Moore's resignation is made all the more unlikely by the fact that he's publicly called these allegations "fake news", in an attempt to throw doubt on the women's claims. The details of the story were "obtained" by Breitbart after the Post reached out to Moore and his campaign for comment on the story.

Wendy Miller told The Washington Post that "she was 14 and working as a Santa's helper at the Gadsden Mall when Moore first approached her, and 16 when he asked her on dates, which her mother forbade".

The Washington Post reports that Leigh Corfman has accused Moore of kissing her and telling her she was pretty in one encounter and in another encounter removing his clothes, touching her over her bra and underpants, and guiding her hand to touch him over his underwear. "I'll stay out here with her, '" says Corfman's mother, Nancy Wells.

Moore, now 70, denied the allegations in a statement to the Post.

Mayer answered that such attacks are complex and persistent and the understanding of the facts behind them evolve over time. So far, no nation-state connection to the much larger 2013 breach has been revealed.

Corfman told the Washington Post that she and Moore did not have intercourse, and that after she dressed, she asked Moore to take her home, and he did.

"If these allegations are true, Roy Moore should step aside for the all the obvious reasons - very disturbing allegations", McConnell told reporters.

Other Republican senators swiftly echoed that sentiment.

"I believed that numerous young criminals whom I had to prosecute would not have committed criminal acts if they had been taught these rules as children", Moore wrote in the book.

"Judge Roy Moore is winning with a double-digit lead".

Moore became a national figure in the early 2000s when he lost his position as Alabama Chief Justice after refusing a court order to remove a Ten Commandments monument from outside the courthouse.

"I remember the further I got from my house, the more nervous I got, ' Corfman said". Now they're on the verge of falling off a political cliff and losing a safe seat in the closely divided US Senate.

A conservative could try a write-in campaign, but those are notoriously hard to pull off even when there's more than a month until election day.

Now 53, Corfman, who voted for Donald Trump in 2016 and Republican candidates in the past three presidential elections, said she thought about confronting Moore several times, especially when he first ran for the state Supreme Court in 2000, but decided against it.
