Breast Cancer Study Helps Researchers Better Understand the Disease

The 180 breast cancer genes: One in five women has a variant that raises her risk of the condition by a third, reveals largest study of its kind

A study combining data from over 300 institutions around the world has found 72 new genetic mutations that may lead to the development of breast cancer, CNN reported.

Previous research about the presence of common BRCA1 and BRCA 2 gene mutations show they also account for about 17 percent of heritable breast cancer risk.

Saturday's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk on City Island drew more than 6,000 participants and raised more than $650,000, the American Cancer Society announced Tuesday. The researchers found that non-cancerous breast tissue had more of a certain type of bacteria, and the cancerous tissue had other types that were elevated.

'There are some clear patterns in the genetic variants that should help us understand why some women are predisposed to breast cancer, and which genes and mechanisms are involved'.

Crestwood Medical Center and WDRM teamed up for a breast cancer awareness concert Monday night. Complete results of the study can be found in the journal OncoTarget.

'But we have no evidence that anyone benefits from these diets, apart from those that collect the fees'.

Ewan McGregor 'splits' from wife Eve Mavrakis after 22 years of marriage
McGregor, Mavrakis and Winstead have not commented . "It was great fun playing those scenes with her, and I loved it". They married and relocated to Los Angeles where they raised four daughters, including a child adopted from Mongolia.

While studying 21,468 ER-negative cases, the researchers identified 10 new gene mutations that could explain approximately 1.5 of the heritable risk of ER-negative breast cancer.

Inheriting either of these genes raises the lifetime risk of developing the disease by as much as 90 per cent for BRCA1 and 85 per cent for BRCA2.

The study uncovered 65 genetic variants that predispose women to the overall risk of the disease and seven variants that predispose women to oestrogen-receptor negative breast cancer, which does not respond to tamoxifen, a treatment used to reduce the risk of breast cancer. Just as it was true in 1985, it remains true today that mammography is the very best tool we have in the fight against breast cancer.

Professor Jacques Simard, from Laval University in Quebec city, Canada, another member of the worldwide team, said: 'Using data from genomic studies, combined with information on other known risk factors, will allow better breast cancer risk assessment, therefore helping to identify a small but meaningful proportion of women at high risk of breast cancer. The studies identified genetic regions specifically associated with either oestrogen-receptor positive or oestrogen receptor negative breast cancer, underscoring the fact that these are biologically distinct cancers that develop differently.

"If you could stop that (cancer) from ever happening to you that would change my quality of life and it would have meant I could have had a second child".

Lifestyle changes such as diet, body weight, exercise and alcohol consumption are some of the modifiable risk factors for this disease.
