Paris plans ban on combustion-engine cars by 2030

A ban on petrol-fuelled vehicles marks a radical escalation of policy in the world's most visited city

Paris's deputy mayor, Christophe Najdovski, told French broadcaster France Info that the mayor's office is planning to ban all combustion-engine cars on the French capital's streets by 2030. The controversial move follows Mayor Anne Hidalgo's plan to ban all diesel cars from the city by 2024, when Paris will host the Summer Olympics.

"This is about planning for the long term with a strategy that will reduce greenhouse gases". City officials are often forced to issue temporary bans on gas- and diesel-powered cars in response to particularly bad surges. Paris has also instituted temporary auto bans inside the city in response to pollutant levels in the area, causing some irritation from city dwellers who have to commute by vehicle.

In its latest initiative to reduce air pollution, Paris City Hall wants gasoline-powered cars off the roads by 2030.

Less than two weeks after Paris celebrated its third annual Day Without Cars, its mayor has decreed that the schedule for moving out fossil-fuel powered cars is moving up.

Razer has always had a knack for good design too, so at the very least, its phone should end up being eye-catching. Hopefully, Razer will have a few more surprises for us apart from what we see here during its reveal event.

Paris will encourage commuters who don't walk, bike or use public transportation to switch to electric cars. Hidalgo also introduced car-free days and zones as well as a 20-mph (32 kph) speed limit throughout the city. The deadline for those cars is 2024, which is when the city will play host to the Olympic games.

Oxford, England, recently announced plans to ban non-electric cars from parts of the city by 2020. New owners can claim €6,000 ($7,100 USD) if purchasing an electric auto, or further increase their incentives to €10,000 ($11,800 USD) should they also arrange to have their old diesel vehicle scrapped alongside the purchase.

Officials hope that France as an entire country will ditch cars dependent on fossil fuels by 2040.
