Brazil's Olympic head arrested on corruption charges

Leonardo Gryner director-general of operations for Rio 2016 Organising Committee has also been arrested

Brazilian and French authorities have alleged Nuzman played a key role in funneling $2 million to former International Olympic Committee member Lamine Diack, who helped land Rio the 2016 games, ESPN reported.

Police said he was being held in connection with crimes including corruption and money laundering.

Leonardo Gryner, the Rio 2016 committee's chief operating officer, was also taken into custody, Brazilian newspaper O Globo reported.

Carlos Nuzman, president of the brazilian olympic Committee and the organising committee of the olympic Games in Rio, suspected of having bought votes to get the olympics 2016, was arrested Thursday in Brazil, police said.

Nuzman sits in the back of a police vehicle. According to prosecutors, last month, after Nuzman was questioned, he rectified his last income tax results to include 16 1-kg bars of gold, over $66,000 in euros and US$50,000, all deposited in Swiss banks.

Reuters report that Marcelo Bretas, the federal judge who authorized his arrest, said new evidence indicated that Nuzman's role in the alleged vote-buying scheme was "more relevant" than initially thought.

Authorities allege that former Rio governor Sergio Cabral, who is serving a 14-year prison term for bribery and money laundering, was the mastermind of the plot, which saw $2 million in bribes paid to Papa Massata Diack, the son of Senegalese IOC member Lamine Diack, before the 2009 vote.

At the time, Nuzman was detained and questioned and authorities confiscated his passport.

Bloomberg Businessweek says Catalonia's struggle for independence may only be the beginning of similar movements across Europe. The Catalan government could declare independence in the coming days.

The revelations come after prosecutors from across the globe launched the so-called "Unfair Play" investigation last month.

A spokesman for the International Olympic Committee acknowledged the arrest and said Brazilian authorities would be requested to pass on relevant information.

Rio beat Chicago, Madrid and Tokyo to win the 2016 Games.

Rio prosecutors say they have new information conclusively showing how the payments were made.

The latest scandal cast a pall over an International Olympic Committee meeting in Lima last month following the designation of Paris for the 2024 Games and Los Angeles as the 2028 host city.

The investigation is ongoing. Nuzman is an honorary member of the IOC.

The IOC investigation will be the first test of the newly elected members of the Ethics Commission including chair Ban Ki Moon.
