Centre to file affidavit on Rohingyas in Supreme Court on Monday

Minister of state for home affairs Kiren Rijiju had earlier said the Rohingya were illegal immigrants and stand to be deported

CPI (ML) will also organise protest marches across Bihar on September 18 against persecution of Rohingya Muslims.

"Even though India is not a signatory to the 1951 Convention on Refugees and also the 1967 Protocol, it is a signatory to a number of United Nations and world conventions on human rights". India has also chose to grant citizenship to Buddhist and Hindu refugees from erstwhile East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). Almost 400,000 Rohingya refugees have fled into Bangladesh since late August during the outbreak of violence in the Rakhine state. "It undermines India's security", Rijiju said in a tweet on Wednesday. It's wrong. Under which law can the Centre send back Rohingya refugees?

The Centre will file an affidavit in the Supreme Court on Monday on its plans to deport Rohingya Muslims, Union home minister Rajnath Singh said today. They are estimated to be around 3,00,000 Rohingya in Bangladesh.

Many politicians including the Union ministers and ministers from the Assam government had called the Rohingyas illegal immigrants in India and said they could be associated with terrorists and hence are a threat to the security of India. According to home ministry officials there were almost 40,000 Rohingya Muslims staying illegally in the country.

The Centre also blamed that a systematic and organised network of agents were deliberately facilitating illegal migration of the Rohingyas in India.

Two Rohingya immigrants Mohammad Salimullah and Mohammad Shaqir, who are registered as refugees under the UNHCR, have moved the Indian Supreme Court, contending they have taken shelter in India after escaping from Myanmar due to widespread discrimination, violence and bloodshed against the community there.

The government's draft affidavit says there is no "violation of fundamental rights of the petitioner" in this case.

Addressing a public gathering, the Lok Sabha MP questioned Modi government's decision to send back the Rohingya refugees to Myanmar, saying if Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen can be allowed to stay in the country, then why can't PM Modi accept Rohingyas as his brothers or friends. Myanmar government does not recognise Rohingyas as their citizens.

In the draft affidavit, the central government said: "There are contemporaneous inputs received by the central government, indicating linkages of some of the unauthorised Rohingya immigrants with Pakistan/ Bangladesh based terror organisations and it is found that there are organised network of agents and touts facilitating illegal migration of Rohingyas in India". "Therefore, it is essential to identify them and keep a watch on their activities for preventing any untoward incident that can take place".
