Google appeals record European Union fine over 'unfair' shopping searches

EU's Margrethe Vestager the Dane Who Is Google's Bane

The EC has ordered Google to stop its anti-competitive behaviour by 28 September, or risk penalty payments of as much as 5 percent of Alphabet's average daily worldwide turnover.

Google has filed a legal appeal against a record-breaking fine handed down by the European Commission this summer for anti-competitive behavior relating to the operation of its product search comparison service, now known as Google Shopping.

Google said it had no further comment.

The Silicon Valley giant had responded to the fine at the time of its announcement by saying that it "respectfully" disagreed with the legal argument being pursued.

"The Commission's decision stands on firm ground, both legally and factually, and we expect the Commission to win on appeal", FairSearch lawyer Thomas Vinje said.

She has won Little Miss, Miss Pre-Teen and Miss Junior Teen crowns, and was chosen Miss North Dakota's Outstanding Teen in 2010. Miss Missouri was the first person announced and Jordin Sparks was the judge who asked her a question.

The fine handed to Google was a significant hike on the previous record penalty of €1.06bn (£937m) dished out by the commission to USA microchip firm Intel in 2009.

"The commission will defend its decision in court", a spokesperson for the commission said.

The consideration of this appeal should take at least a year and a half, and given the complexity of the case, rather two years, has there shown to the Court of justice of the EU.

When the fine was issued, Europe's competition commissioner, Margrethe Vestager, said: "What Google has done is illegal under European Union antitrust rules".

The EU fined the internet giant for abusing its dominance in Europe to position its own shopping comparison service at the top of Google search results. Margrethe Vestager, the EU's antitrust chief, has also threatened further probes on travel or map services. The first relates to Android, its operating system on a smartphone, and the second AdSense, its advertising network.
