Unrest feared after Kenya election ordered to be rerun

Unrest feared after Kenya election ordered to be rerun

"For the first time we have got justice". Global election observers had said they saw no interference with the vote. The litigation and debate on the merits of the election was done at the Supreme Court and not on the streets. The court says the election commission "committed illegalities and irregularities" after opposition leader Raila Odinga challenged the vote.

Kenyatta's lead counsel, Ahmednassir Abdulahi said in court that his client wanted to see the full judgment to understand how the alleged irregularities would "obliterate" his 1.4 million vote winning margin.

Rights group Amnesty International's country director Justus Nyang'aya said the "ruling demonstrates the independence of Kenya's judiciary and sets an example for the rest of the world".

Mr Odinga has contested the last three elections and lost each time, and has claimed the votes were marred by rigging on each occasion.

Following the election, more than 20 protesters were shot and killed by Kenyan police, although the opposition claimed that more than 100 had died.

In 2013, Odinga ran again, but Kenyatta won.

"What IEBC did was treasonable because they wanted to declare the presidency against the Constitution".

A number of sports teams, leagues and players-most notably Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Within two hours, people helped him reach his initial $200,000 goal.

The president's chief lawyer, AhKmednassir Abdulahi, told the court the quashing of the result was a "very political decision", but said they would live with the consequences. He also said the election commission's IT system had been hacked to manipulate the results.

Announcing the verdict of four out of the six judges in his Friday morning ruling, Judge David Maraga said that "the declaration of Kenyatta's win was invalid, null and void".

Other Presidential elections have been challenged in Uganda where Kizza Besigye sued the Electoral Commission and President Yoweri Museveni in 2001 and 2006.

"Those commissioners must go".

"This decision is absolutely devoid of an act of legal reasoning, but we will leave it, it's the Supreme Court that makes the final decision", said Ahmednassir.

Odinga's lawyers asked the Court to nullify the elections, but Kenyatta's lawyers said the results provided in court from the verification of the IEBC servers differed from what their experts found out. The electoral commission declared Kenyatta the victor three days later.

The court did not place blame on Mr Kenyatta or his party.
