GOP Senators: Comey Drafted Letter Exonerating Clinton Long Before Probe Was Over

FBI refuses to publish documents about Clinton's email handling

President Donald Trump is slamming the "rigged system" in Washington, D.C., following revelations that former FBI Director James Comey reportedly planned to clear then-Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton of all wrongdoing before she was even interviewed.

Former FBI Director James Comey called Clinton's use of a private email address and server to handle classified information "extremely careless" in his July Congressional testimony but stopped short of filing charges.

Senators Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., say newly released transcripts from a federal watchdog agency indicate that Comey chose to draft a statement exonerating Clinton in May of 2016, before Clinton was interviewed by the FBI.

Clevenger is still trying to obtain the documents from the FBI related to Clinton's investigation and wants to prove her guilt.

"Conclusion first, fact-gathering second-that's no way to run an investigation".

Hardy told Clevenger in a letter that he would "have to prove one of three things in order to get the records: (1) Mrs. Clinton consented to the release of the records; (2) Mrs. Clinton is dead; or (3) my request pertains to a matter of public interest".

The senators found out about Comey's statement after reading transcripts of interviews with his aides conducted by the Office of Special Counsel, which interviewed Comey's chief of staff James Rybicki and a deputy general counsel, Trisha Anderson.

Grassley and Graham said they learned about Comey's draft "exoneration statement" after reviewing transcripts of interviews with top Comey aides.

Two groups, Judicial Watch and Cause of Action Institute, have been prodding the government for more information about the Clinton emails, and they cheered the judge's ruling as a victory for transparency. Grassley and Graham wrote. He also said the Federal Bureau of Investigation probe of Russian interference in the 2016 election, which includes a look at whether Trump campaign officials coordinated with Russian in that effort, was on his mind when he fired Comey.

Grassley chairs the Judiciary Committee and Graham chairs one of its subcommittees.

Chaffetz appeared on "Fox & Friends" and addressed a report that suggested Comey had come to a decision regarding the Clinton case months before it actually ended.

Roughly a week later, Trump fired Comey.

In a tweet storm, Benjamin Wittes made several points rebuffing the president's suggestion that Comey acted inappropriately with respect to the Hillary Clinton email investigation.

Clevenger wrote back baffled that he had to explain why his request pertained to public interest given that at the time of the inquiry Clinton "was the Democratic nominee for president of the United States, a former US secretary of state, and a former USA senator".
