Also on the programme was Kevin Kilbane, who agreed Liverpool should offload Coutinho.

On Friday it was reported by Sky Sports that Coutinho submitted a transfer request via email, with Barcelona being his preferred destination.

Jamie Carragher admits he is "surprised" Philippe Coutinho has handed in a transfer request but still does not believe Liverpool will let the player leave this summer.

And Barcelona's interest in getting Coutinho on-board has intensified following the departure of Neymar to Paris St-Germain.

A statement issued by Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool's US-based owners, said: "We wish to offer clarity as regards our position on a possible transfer of Philippe Coutinho".

Klopp's comments on the Coutinho situation were oddly cryptic, however.

"I think I've already said it a few times but maybe that's not 100 per cent clear".

'Tell my family I love them'
Malcolm Antwan Orr, 29 was caught on an officer's eyeglass camera refusing to obey orders before whipping out a gun and firing. However, Smith suddenly noticed the man put his hand in the pocket that suggested that he was carrying a weapon.

Manager Jurgen Klopp hinted that the club may have considered selling Coutinho had an offer come in for the player earlier in the transfer window, and Carragher agrees.

"It's hard now as he doesn't want to be there - Liverpool is one of the biggest clubs in the world but he doesn't want to be there".

Questioned on whether his job now was to keep Coutinho happy, Klopp added: "I can't keep players happy".

"I was not playing at Chelsea so I took the decision to go somewhere else. We had a very good first half, a good intensity like I wanted", he told BBC Sport.

Liverpool were in scintillating form last season till Christmas, but by the end of their campaign they just about managed to make it into the top four and qualify for Champions League. Of course a player of enormous talents was always going to attract the attention of Europe's very biggest clubs, but one thing was for sure - he wouldn't kick up a fuss.

While the Brazilian has earned the wrath of the Liverpool fans for putting in a transfer request a day before their opening league game of the season, it has been claimed that the player felt compelled to do so.
