Strikingly, while large majorities of Democrats and independents back efforts to sustain the statute, even Republicans and Trump supporters lean toward saying the administration should try making the law work, not take steps to hinder it. Trump wants to move on to tax reform and infrastructure but the Affordable Healthcare Act, an imploding law that Republicans can not fix and will not repeal, stands in the way.

Since Congress began debating repeal and replace legislation, there has been news about instability in the ACA marketplaces.

When asked about the 2010 health care law, a slim majority of Americans (51%) say they oppose the legislation vs. 42% of Americans who favor the bill.

Most (60%) of the public say that President Trump and Republicans in Congress control the government and are responsible for any problems with the ACA going forward, twice the share (28%) who say President Obama and Democrats in Congress are responsible for such problems.

Of course, pollsters are quick to caution that the generic ballot could change before the election, that gerrymandering makes Democrats' obstacles steep, and that President Donald Trump might pull his approval numbers out of their current tailspin.

Few showers, thunderstorm possible later
Tuesday - Mostly sunny with a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms and a high in the low 80s. Saturday: Mostly cloudy, humid, scattered showers/thunderstorms (especially in the morning).

So there you have it: Republicans have offered up four takes on repeal and replace and none of them increase the number of insured Americans or keep the same numbers as Obamacare.

Just 21 percent of respondents — but 49 percent of Republicans — want the GOP to continue working on a plan to repeal and replace Obamacare, the survey said. "Unless Trump and the GOP can stop their polling side, it doesn't seem like conditions will be very good for Republicans in 2018". Favorable views have increased 9 percentage points since the 2016 presidential election, with the trend occurring among Democrats, independents, and Republicans. The poll illustrates that the American people aren't as stupid as Trump believes they are.

This month's survey also probes the public's views about the Affordable Care Act's insurance marketplaces, which allow Americans who don't get insurance through their employer to shop for and purchase insurance, with tax credits available to low- and moderate-income customers.

The poll of 1,211 adults was conducted August 1- 6.The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 3 percentage points. Both the random digit dial landline and cell phone samples were provided by Marketing Systems Group (MSG). The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 3 percentage points for the full sample.
