Train crash in Egypt's Alexandria kills 24 injures 55 sources

A TRAIN crash in Egypt has left 25 people dead and 65 others injured, according to officials.

One of the trains was travelling from Port Said and the other from Cairo, Ahram Online said, before they crashed head-on.

People gather at the site of a train collision near Egypt's Mediterranean city of Alexandria, on August 11, 2017.

Health officials fear that the death toll may rise further. Rescue teams, meanwhile, continued to look for more bodies and injured passengers inside the carriages.

Alexandria, Egypt's second-largest city, sits on the Mediterranean coast in the north.

The statement did not say what caused the accident, only that the authority's experts would investigate.

Hospitals in Alexandria announced state of emergency to receive more injured.

Egyptians have long complained that the government has failed to deal with chronic transport problems, with roads as poorly maintained as railway lines.

The dead and injured were initially placed on blankets by the sides of the tracks amid farmland on the outskirts of Alexandria.

Egypt's deadliest rail accident occurred near the capital in 2002, when a fire ripped through a crowded train killing more than 370 people.

Egypt has experienced other major train tragedies in the past, including a derailment which killed 19 people in Badr Rashin in Giza in 2013.
