United Nations votes to impose new sanctions on North Korea

Tillerson will have chance to talk with China in Manila - US official

Foreign companies have been banned from investing in North Korean businesses or issue any more permits to additional permits to North Korean laborers.

Foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on Saturday formally endorsed the framework of the code of conduct (COC) to address disputes in the South China Sea/West Philippine Sea for eventual adoption by the regional grouping and China.

"If they have nuclear weapons that can threaten the United States".

In early July, Haley told the Security Council that if it was united, the worldwide community could cut off major sources of hard currency to North Korea, restrict oil to its military and weapons programs, increase air and maritime restrictions and hold senior officials accountable. Wang also urged the US and South Korea "to stop increasing tensions" and said that all sides should return to negotiations.

The Security Council unanimously approved the sanctions on North Korea, including banning coal and other exports worth over 1 billion USA dollars (£770 million).

"We consider the attempts of the USA and some other countries to shift the responsibility in what is happening [on the Korean Peninsula] onto Russia and China, and to nearly blame Moscow and Beijing for "conniving in" North Korea's nuclear missile ambitions, as baseless", the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement this week. It bans North Korea from trading coal, iron, lead, iron and lead ore, and seafood.

The Hwasong-14 missile was sacked hundreds of miles from North Korea before crashing into the sea near a Japanese island.

"This resolution is the single largest economic sanctions package ever leveled against the North Korean regime".

National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster claimed the U.S. is preparing for a "preventive war" with North Korea as Kim Jong-un continues with his nuclear programme.

"This resolution is the single largest economic sanctions package ever leveled against the North Korean regime", said Nikki Haley, the USA ambassador to the United Nations.

Although China and Russian Federation have pushed for a resumption of the six-party talks with North Korea, disagreement remains on how to bring Washington and Pyongyang to the table.

Mega Millions jackpot soars to $346 million, Powerball to $307 million

DELURY: One thing North Korea is extremely good at is absorbing pain.

The United States began talks on a resolution with China a month ago, after Pyongyang launched its first intercontinental ballistic missile on July 4, followed by a second ICBM test on July 28.

PUSH FOR DIALOGUE Tillerson also met his Chinese counterpart, who said they had "specific and meaningful" talks about North Korea and agreed that the new resolutions should be a means of returning to dialogue. "So, in the process of further improving China-Asean relations, Singapore can play its special and positive role", he said.

Noting that sanctions were necessary but not the ultimate goal, the Minister said the measure aimed to bring parties concerned back to the negotiating table.

The Security Council vote was held against the backdrop of mixed signals by the Trump administration on how to deal with North Korea, which has remained in what amounts to a suspended state of war with the United States since the armistice that halted the Korean War in 1953.

Japan has asked China through diplomatic channels several times since April to restrict its acceptance of North Korean workers, according to Japanese government officials.

"When we look at the militarisation, the media focus is on militarisation of some features of China".

The South China Sea chapter in the latest draft communique, a negotiated text subject to changes, is a watered-down version of one issued in Laos past year. Their talks will likely touch upon the issue of potential sanctions against North Korea over its missile tests, as well as the existing tensions between Washington and Beijing over trade and USA placement of its THAAD missile defense system in South Korea.

Robespierre L. Bolivar, spokesman of the Philippines' Department of Foreign Affairs, said the foreign ministers "endorsed the framework of the code of conduct for eventual adoption at the ASEAN-China ministerial meeting on August 6".

"The President appreciates China's and Russia's cooperation in securing passage of this resolution", the White House said in a statement after the measure passed.

For the US, it was a long-awaited sign of progress for Trump's strategy of trying to enlist Beijing's help to squeeze North Korea diplomatically and economically.
