Chinese Tourists Arrested for Making Nazi Salutes in Berlin

The Reichstag

This is a slogan two Chinese visitors to Berlin should take to heart after being detained by German police for giving the notorious Hitler salute outside the Reichstag building in the city.

The pair, 36 and 49-year-old males, were arrested on Saturday after being spotted photographing each other giving the banned salute.

However, they will be charged with "using symbols of illegal organizations" and could be sentenced to three years in jail, according to the authorities.

A police spokeswoman declined on Sunday to reveal further details, and said she did not know whether the tourists were still in Berlin, or even in Germany. Police witnessed the tourists breaking laws that have been in place since 1945 forbidding the use of symbols and gestures used by Hitler and his followers, The New York Times reported. If a fine was meted out, the bail money they have already hand over would cover the costs.

The Post reported the Chinese government has expressed concern in the past for "embarrassing behavior" by Chinese tourists traveling overseas and has encouraged travelers to respect local laws and customs.

The volume of Chinese tourists has surged since China put the European Union on its list of approved countries, with many from the mainland taking advantage of direct flights to shop and enjoy sightseeing in the continent.

The Reichstag building has a history bound up with Hitler's rise, as the Nazis blamed the Communists when it was destroyed by fire in 1933.
