Eiffel Tower suspect says he was in touch with IS member

Chinese tourists detained in Berlin for Hitler salute

In Saturday's incident, the suspect tried to force his way into the secure zone beneath the tower, held out a knife and said "Allahu akbar", the Arabic phrase for "God is great", an official close to the investigation said.

After pushing his way past a security guard at the entrance to the Eiffel Tower, the man approached soldiers patrolling at the site and, holding a blade, the source said.

The tower reopened on Sunday morning as usual at 09:00 am (0700 GMT).

During questioning by police, the man stated he had wanted to carry out an attack against a soldier and was in contact with a member of Daesh terrorist group who encouraged him to act, the source said.

The official said the claim prompted investigators to upgrade the seriousness of the alleged offense, which originally they classified as a common crime by someone with a history of psychiatric problems.

But the grand jury is likely far worse for him, unless he somehow turns out to be innocent in the entire Russian Federation probe. And while the President has lamented information leaks coming from his West Wing, there are also actual leaks there.

He is said to be a Frenchman born in the West African state of Mauritania.

The tower, which lets visitors enter until midnight, was evacuated an hour later in what a police source said was a standard precaution.

Last night, the Eiffel Tower was lit in red and blue in the colours of the football club "Paris Saint Germain" in honour of the arrival of the Brazilian star Neymar. The wave of terrorist attacks of the last two years has so far left a total of 239 dead and in recent months the attacks have been directed in particular against security forces.

Monuments in the French capital have occasionally been evacuated for security reasons, as the country remains on alert after deadly attacks since 2015.
