Arsenal win Community Shield after being Chelsea on penalties

Chelsea summer signing Antonio Rudiger seen above right with Marcos Alonso also trained

After the Premier League and FA Cup winners were locked at 1-1 following an evenly contested 90 minutes, the Frenchman stroked home after Alvaro Morata and Thibaut Courtois missed for Chelsea.

The "ABBA" system is based on the format used in tennis tie-breaks, with the team taking the first kick in each pair of kicks alternating.

The match, England's traditional season curtain-raiser, is a repeat of last season's FA Cup final, which saw Arsenal beat Premier League champions Chelsea 2-1.

It was trialled in the Community Shield as part of the FA's plan to try and eliminate the advantage given to the first penalty taker, and seemed to work in Arsenal's favour as Courtois missed his effort before new Chelsea striker missed his to hand victory to the Gunners.

Cahill stepped up first for Chelsea and scored before Theo Walcott and Nacho Monreal converted for Arsenal.

Nigeria worldwide Victor Moses stabbed the ball home on 47 minutes for Chelsea, but Arsenal equalised nine minutes from time through new signing from Schalke, Sead Kolasinac.

Arsene Wenger made a plea for unity to the Arsenal fanbase after another Wembley success against Premier League champion Chelsea in the Community Shield.

Two US soldiers wounded in deadly Afghanistan attack
They also claimed an earlier suicide bomber used a motorbike to attack a US convoy in the same area, killing 11 USA troops. The shops in the targeted building were closed when the attack occurred as Friday is weekly off day in the country.

Club record-signing Lacazette almost opened his account at Wembley when he curled an effort from inside the box following a counter attack but it rattled off the woodwork.

Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez was present as a spectator, as was Chelsea's Eden Hazard.

Arsenal started brightly with Lacazette, Danny Welbeck and Alex Iwobi all having early half-chances.

Per Mertesacker had to go off after 30 minutes, struck by Gary Cahill's flailing arm in the Arsenal box.

Morata, on for Michy Batshuayi, then met Willian's improvised cross, but all he could do was slice it off-target.

From the resultant free-kick, Kolasinac headed Arsenal level with nine minutes remaining to send the game to spot-kicks.

Morata wasted a late chance to win it before the match went to penalties and Arsenal extended their winning record at Wembley.
