Will uphold the Constitution, says Venkaiah Naidu after winning the vice-presidential election

Naidu secured 516 votes while Gandhi got 244 votes.

At the same time, Modi also told the BJP and NDA MPs that they should now meet Naidu instead of the leader of his party like Vice President and maintain his dignity.

The voting started at 10 a.m. and will continue till 5 p.m.

Prime minister Narendra Modi will address the Parliament members of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Friday, ahead of the vice-president's election on Saturday. BJP MPs Sanwarlal Jat and Vijay Goel could not vote in the Vice-Presidential Election because they are hospitalised, reported PTI. The poll percentage recorded was 98.21%, with 771 of 785 members of Parliament casting their votes.

One BJP Lok Sabha MP is barred from voting following a judicial pronouncement.

Naidu defeated the united opposition candidate Gopal Krishna Gandhi, the grandson of pre-independence icon Mahatma Gandhi and former state Governor, by a huge margin of 272 votes.

Unlike the Lok Sabha, the going has been tough for the BJP in the Upper House. On the other hand, the ruling NDA may place Gandhi on the post easily due to their majority in the Lok Sabha.

The BJD and the JD (U), which had supported the NDA nominee Ram Nath Kovind for the post of President, had backed Gandhi.

Ms Kumar had received votes of 225 MPs, while Mr Gandhi was supported by 244.

The winning candidate will succeed the present Vice-President Hamid Ansari, who had already held the post for two consecutive terms.

Naidu has come a long way since those days of political obscurity."Coming from an agricultural background, I never imagined I would be here". His father, too, passed away early and he was raised by his maternal uncles.

"It s an honour for me to become Vice President from a family of an ordinary farmer".

He was the convener of the Jai Prakash Narayan Kshatra Sangharsha Samiti of Andhra Pradesh, and actively participated in anti-emergency protests, for which he was imprisoned under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA), and remained behind bars for several months.

He remained underground until his arrest, distributing anti-government literature in educational institutions in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, travelling on a scooter along with a woman activist on pillion in a bid not to arouse suspicion. He was also imprisoned during this phase.

Even though the Bharatiya Janata Party was on a weak wicket in southern India, Venkaiah embraced it tightly.

During the Atal Bihari Vajpayee's governance, he held the portfolio of the Union Cabinet Minister for Rural Development and rose to the ranks of BJP National President in 2002.

His skills made the most of him and he fought his first election to victory from Udayagiri constituency in the 1978 Andhra Pradesh assembly election. The Lok Sabha now has 544 members and the Rajya Sabha 244.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Naidu "for a fruitful & motivating tenure".

The Prime Minister is now on his way to Naidu's residence. He said, "Naidu has been our active and efficient colleague of many years".
