Prince Philip: A life of service

Prince Philip seen with Queen Elizabeth is saying farewell to public engagements retiring at 96

It is one of more than 780 organisations of which he has been patron, president or a member.

As well as the thousands of solo public engagements, up until his retirement the Duke has also taken 637 solo overseas trips, made 5,493 speeches and authored 14 books.

As the Captain General of the Royal Marines, Prince Philip attends the ceremony paying tribute to personnel of the 1664 Global Challenge - a series of strength and endurance challenges raising funds and awareness for charity.

Prince Philip's last day on the job didn't get off to the best start, courtesy of a report on the Daily Telegraph's website this morning claiming that he was dead.

Edwards said he'll be greatly missed.

"He loves the fact that Royal Marines, when they do something, they do something that's a little bit extraordinary, and the guys come up with these really weird and wonderful and extraordinary challenges and it makes him sort of, certainly on this occasion, chuckle".

The 96-year-old has bowed out of public duty, at the Captain General's parade of the Royal Marines. "In taking this decision, The Duke has the full support of the Queen", read the palace's statement.

Good for her, then, that Philip remains healthy for a man of his age despite his two-night hospitalization in June for the treatment of an undisclosed infection.

While he will remain associated with them, he "will no longer play an active role by attending engagements", Buckingham Palace said.

The Duke of Edinburgh began to scale back the number of engagements he participated in when he turned 90 years old in 2011.
