Record levels of refugees and displaced persons

Uganda received the largest number of new refugees in 2016 in the world, said new figures released by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) on Monday.

The UNHCR's new Global Trends report on displacement said at the end of last year 300,000 more people than the preceding year had been displaced.

The 2016 report showed that the number of refugees worldwide reached 22.5 million, the most ever.

A further 2.8 million people sought asylum.

The vast majority of displaced people, 40.3 million, left their home but did not cross the border of their country.

Pakistan stands first in highest number of refugees with 1.6 million.

Filippo Grandi, High Commissioner for Refugees said, "It is an extremely moveable situation, an extremely dynamic situation, which reflects in turn conflicts that continue to affect mostly and primarily and very violently civilians". Twelve million people in the country were forced to abandon their homes in 2016 - that's more than half of the country's population.

Syria's conflict remains the world's biggest producer of refugees (5.5 million), however in 2016 the biggest new factor was South Sudan where the disastrous breakdown of peace efforts in July that year contributed to the outflow of 739,900 people by year's end (1.87 million today).

The UN refugee chief meanwhile voiced most alarm over the rapidly deteriorating situation in South Sudan, which he said was now the world's "fastest growing refugee crisis and displacement crisis".

Ongoing crises in sub-Saharan Africa have resulted in large and sudden population displacements, which results in neighboring countries opening their borders to those fleeing conflict.

Musa Ecweru, minister for refugees, told Anadolu Agency: "We want the global community to lift the pressure and fix the damage the refugees are putting on the limited resources in the communities that host them".

"We have to do better for these people".

More than 4 million South Sudanese have fled their homes, almost 2 million of whom went to neighboring countries, said United Nations and other organizations.

- One in 113 people worldwide is displaced.

Mr Grandi also warned of the burden being placed on numerous world's poorest states, as some 84% of the world's displaced people are living in poor and middle income countries.

Another example is the world's largest refugee settlement, located in Uganda and called Bidi Bidi.

"This huge imbalance reflects several things including the continuing lack of consensus internationally when it comes to refugee hosting and the proximity of many poor countries to regions of conflict", the United Nations agency said.

A third (4.9 million people) are hosted by the world's least developed countries. Only Syria witnessed a larger number of new refugees, 824,000.

2016 marked the highest increase in the number of refugees after World War Second.
