Vidal and Vargas strike late to beat Cameroon

A look at Cameroon in some past Confederations cups

The Confederations Cup is always an interesting tournament for some of the fascinating matchups it brings about, like 2017 AFCON winners Cameroon taking on 2015 Copa America champions Chile. Cameroon open their Confederations Cup campaign against Chile on Sunday.

South American champion Chile faces Cameroon on Sunday, before playing against Germany and Australia in its remaining group stage games.

Vargas had the ball in the net as the match moved into stoppage time at the end of the first half, deftly lifting it over the onrushing Cameron goalkeeper Fabrice Ondoa after being expertly fed by a defence-splitting pass from Vidal.

Sanchez provided the cross for Arturo Vidal to head home their 81st minute opener and inspired the second goal as well.

But there was a delay in Chile's celebrations on the latter goal, after the assistant's flag went up for an apparent offside - only for the video assistant referee to overrule the decision and award the goal.

Cameroon will now that this is going to be a really tough game for them since Chile are a side that have beaten the likes of Brazil and Argentina.

Cameroon goalkeeper Jospeh Ondoa was required to do plenty of work in the first-half although inside the first minute the upright did his job for him as it denied Vargas.

Cameroon's chances came thanks to occasional poor passing at the back from Chile, with Vincent Aboubakar forcing a save in the 11th from keeper Johnny Herrera, in for the injured Claudio Bravo.

In the second period Cameroon were resigned to very few notable efforts with captain Benjamin Moukandjo firing his free-kick wide.
