I probably won't watch Olympic golf - McIlroy

Golf's current program relies on urine testing rather than blood testing for fear that drawing blood could harm a golfer's performance.

"I understand that it's been tough scheduling, and I understand all of that side of things, but when it's once every four years, I think it's something you can certainly make an exception for, and that's been my attitude towards it".

"I can't worry about other guys".

"I could take HGH (Human Growth Hormone) and get away with it". If golf is in the Olympics it needs to improve the drug testing.

McIlroy spoke Tuesday after a practice round for the British Open.

"It will loom over me throughout the Olympic Games, for sure", the two-time major victor said Tuesday, calling his decision to withdraw the "hardest decision I've ever had to make in my life at 22 years old". He is more interested in track, swimming and diving. He called those sports "the stuff that matters". "I bounced back and forth with it and ultimately a decision had to be made yesterday".

Spieth says he's a huge supporter of Olympic golf and playing for the United States.

McIlroy wasn't the only player this week to offer a less-than-glowing endorsement of golf's first appearance in the Games since 1904.

"On average I probably get tested four to five times a year, which is very little compared to the rest of the Olympic sports", said the world number four.

Thumb-sucking and nail-biting children show fewer allergies in later life
Researchers have found thumb sucking and nail biting in young children may be protective against allergies. The findings have emerged from the ongoing Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study .

"While it has always been a major goal to compete in the Olympics on behalf of my country, playing golf can not take precedent over the safety of our family". But I'll make it a goal to be at Tokyo in 2020.

And the International Golf Federation's president Peter Dawson has admitted the debacle does not help the sport's reputation. McIlroy's decision to withdraw based on the Zika Virus now seems like more of an excuse when actually, he just doesn't care about playing for a medal when he's got major championships and millions of dollars on his mind.

Bach told German news agencies that "these are individual decisions taken by the players that stand in contrast to the World Health Organization recommendations".

Rory McIlroy has suggested that golf will not be one of the sports that "matter" at next month's Rio Olympics.

Two-time major champion Jordan Spieth dropped out on Monday, just before the deadline to set the 60-man field. Others will shame him for it, which he is well aware of.

"This decision will loom over me throughout the Olympic Games".

"Those guys (Spieth, Johnson and Day) are having a great run at the minute".

"Yeah, I mean the bad publicity is unfortunate, obviously", said No. 11-ranked Justin Rose, the English 2013 U.S. Open champion who considers the Olympics a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" and will represent Britain.

While the symptoms of the virus - which include a rash, headaches and joint pain - are not severe, it has been linked to microcephaly in newborn babies and some cases of the muscle-weakening disease Guillain-Barré syndrome in adults.
