AG Lynch to testify on Clinton email investigation

House Republicans grilled Attorney General Loretta Lynch on Tuesday for what they saw as stonewalling over questions regarding the Justice Department's decision not to pursue charges against Hillary Clinton over her use of a private email server.

"Secretary Clinton stated repeatedly that no classified information was contained within her private email system".

He said "no reasonable prosecutor" would bring a criminal case against Clinton, and recommended the Department of Justice not attempt doing so.

"Why was this meeting, particularly in light of your previous appointment by President Clinton, not grounds for recusing yourself?" he asked Lynch. Lynch then said that she would accept whatever recommendation the Federal Bureau of Investigation and her prosecutors presented on Clinton.

During her opening statement, Lynch said that she would not be able to answer questions about specifics regarding the investigation into Hillary Clinton.

House Judiciary Committee chairman Bob Goodlate, a Virginia Republican, rejected the FBI's conclusion, saying, "the FBI's conclusion leaves many more questions than answers".

Lynch accepted the recommendation from the FBI and from her prosecutors, and closed out the investigation without charges.

At least 20 killed in Italy train crash
Rescue services parked their ambulances and fire trucks among the olive trees and set up a field hospital to treat the injured. The last major rail accident left 29 dead in 2009 after a train carrying gas derailed, sparking an explosion.

But Republicans refused to relent, urging Lynch to debate facts about the case - an approach Lynch pushed back on by persistently referring panel members to Comey's own testimony from last week.

"As Attorney General it would be inappropriate for me to comment further on the underlying facts of the investigations or the legal basis for the team's recommendation", she said.

Democratic lawmakers on the committee asked Lynch about efforts to tighten gun control in the wake of shootings of clubgoers and police in Orlando and Dallas, as well as ways to reduce fatal police shootings of unarmed African Americans amid ongoing protests over the issue.

"This has now become an issue for Congress in that it appears Secretary Clinton testified falsely when appearing under oath before the Select Committee on Benghazi", Goodlatte said in his prepared statement Tuesday, referring to Clinton's assertions that she did not send emails marked classified at the time from her private server.

The attorney general vows to continue to offer funds, training and technical assistance to state and local law enforcement that provides body cameras, de-escalation training and education in implicit bias.

He says he believes less-powerful government workers would not have received the same treatment. Though she said the two did not discuss the Hillary Clinton email investigation, she expressed regret for the meeting and acknowledged that it had "cast a shadow" on the public perception of the Justice Department's independence.
