Black Lives Matter Activist DeRay Mckesson Arrested in La

A look at protests and related events nationwide Saturday following the police shootings of black men in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and suburban St. Paul, Minnesota, and the deadly sniper attack on police officers in Dallas.

Riot police in full gear stopped protesters in Baton Rouge from walking onto an interstate on Sunday evening, police said, thwarting a protest tactic that social justice activists have increasingly tried in several USA cities.

The situation is also tense in Dallas, where five officers were killed by a black man during a protest rally.

Various law enforcement officials said during the press conference they understood tensions are high in the city but stressed safety as their number one priority.

The Baton Rouge Police Department handed over the investigation into the shooting to the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation a day after the shooting. In the video of McKesson's arrest, you can hear a cop say "You in them loud shoes, if I see you in the road, if I get close to you, you're going to jail".

"We welcome the protests", the officer told The Advocate in a video posted online.

According to CBS and Advocate reporters, police rushed onto a resident's property who had given protesters permission to be in her yard.

"The police continue to just provoke people", McKesson said after an officer yells to a group of people that if they step on the roadway they will be arrested. About 50 protesters were arrested in St. Paul, and arrests were made in Baton Rouge as well.

Jay Bryson, a protester, said: "Our gun culture is out of control right now".

Booking documents provided by the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office say Mckesson was arrested on a charge of obstructing a highway.

In New Orleans, a demonstration featured what organizers called a "peaceful performative protest" in which attendees staged a "die-in" at New Orleans Police Department headquarters.

The officers, equipped with clubs and gas masks, used smoke grenades and pepper spray to break up the crowd. I don't want the death penalty for them.

On 7 July, five white police officers were shot and seven others wounded by Micah Johnson - a black man - at a peaceful demonstration against police brutality in Dallas.

There were similar images of the apparent use of excessive force against Black Lives Matter protesters in other parts of the country.

Johnson, who was himself killed during the assault, supported black militant groups who encouraged violence against police. He told the crowd that the senseless killings of black people "have to stop".
