John Travolta pulled upcoming 'Gotti' movie from Lionsgate to get wider release

Lionsgate Drops John Travolta's Mob Drama “Gotti,” Sells Film Back to Producers (Exclusive)

The star found new financial backing for the movie to enable a wide release.

The production of this film was troubled from the start with a number of actors apparently attached to the lead role.

According to Morgan, the producers are now negotiating with two studios that are interested in releasing the project with the aim of premiering Gotti at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

"Entourage" star Kevin Connolly directed the film, which at one point was connected to director Barry Levinson and actors Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, Lindsay Lohan, Ben Foster, and Chazz Palminteri, according to Deadline. About three weeks ago, Travolta claims to have personally sought out a new financier: Edward Walson, a producer of Broadway plays who's also backed such films as Woody Allen's Café Society and Wonder Wheel. He says that he actually worked on getting a bigger producer to buy the film - and it worked.

Lionsgate accepted the offer in a rare moment of generosity in the entertainment industry.

"It wasn't dropped. It wasn't easy to get Lionsgate to give it up".

"He's a movie star probably proud of his work and wants to get as a wide release as possible", she continued.

Taking a leaf from Donald Trump's playbook, John Travolta has said that word that his biopic about mobster John Gotti being pulled from release is "fake news".

His real-life wife, Kelly Preston portrays his wife in the film, Victoria Gotti. "We didn't anticipate this speculation that is so grossly wrong", Travolta told Deadline.

This wasn't the first time John Gotti's life was adapted to film.

John Gotti rises to the top of the NY underworld to become the boss of the Gambino crime family.

Entitled Gotti, the film was set to be released by Lionsgate in America, who scheduled a December unveiling for the project, ahead of it getting a video on demand slot.

But he was eventually convicted for a host of murders, as well as extortion, racketeering and tax evasion, and died in prison in 2002.
