San Marcos police officer shot and killed while serving warrant

Regarding police officers killed in the line of duty, ambush attacks account for the most, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Officer Kenneth Copeland, 58, of the San Marcos, Texas, Police Department, was shot multiple times by a hidden assailant and sustained fatal wounds despite wearing a bullet-proof vest. Around 3:27 p.m., he said his recording caught several more loud bangs.

According to the Austin-American Statesman, the officer was serving a warrant at a home near an elementary school when the suspect shot him multiple times.

The suspect, who was not identified, holed up in a house while officers on the scene called for backup and formed a perimeter around the area "in hopes of getting the assailant out peacefully", Stapp said.

It was unclear, he said, if the wound was self-inflicted or the result of police gunfire.

Pizza Hut To Deliver 6-Packs Of Beer, Fine Wines In 2018
During the summer, the pizza chain announced that it would be hiring 14,000 more drivers around the country by the end of 2017. All drivers with beer and wine deliveries on their routes will be at least 21 years old, according to the company.

The suspect surrendered to officers and was transported to a nearby hospital with a gunshot wound. Prior to that, he worked as a corrections officer with the Texas Department of Corrections from 1982 to 1990 and was a Deputy Sheriff with Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office from 1990 to 1995. The shooting incident took place when the officer was attempting to arrest the man on charges related to a violent crime.

The escort traveled southbound on Interstate 35 to Wonder World Drive and then drove on Ranch Road 12.

During the press conference Stapp said Copeland served the San Marcos Police Department for 19-years. The officer was reported to be with other officers while serving the warrant. Mettz has not been charged in the shooting yet, officials said. He said, "Shortly after their arrival, it appears this individual began firing at the officers much like in an ambush-type situation".

Copeland is the first San Marcos police officer to die in the line of duty. He leaves behind a wife and four sons. "Ken's a hero", Stapp said. "They are a part of our family as well and they did a great job". "His picture's is hanging in different parts of this police department because everybody loved him", said Stapp.

"Today was his day off".
