US Special Counsel Robert Mueller has subpoenaed Donald Trump's Deutsche Bank records

Special counsel Robert Mueller is reportedly requesting Trump family records from German-based Deutsche Bank

A person familiar with Mueller's investigation told the news agency Reuters on Tuesday that Germany's largest bank received a subpoena from the United States special counsel several weeks ago to provide information on certain money and credit transactions, confirming a report by German daily Handelsblatt published on the same day.

The Guardian, citing German newspaper Handelsblatt, reported that the bank has since cooperated with the request and handed over banking records to investigators.

Mr Mueller is investigating claims of collusion between Trump's aides and Russian officials while also probing Moscow's influence in the USA presidential election which brought Trump, the billionaire businessman into power.

Mueller's probe, established on May 17, is mandated to continue the FBI investigation into the Russian government's alleged efforts to interfere with the 2016 USA presidential election.

Trump, his wife, daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner are understood to beclients of Deutsche Bank. More recently, though, he has highlighted news reports that Peter Strzok, the former top FBI official assigned to the investigation, was reassigned after it was discovered he and another team member had exchanged texts disparaging Trump and supporting Clinton.

In an interview this past July Trump told The New York Times that Mueller would cross a red line if he examined his or his family's finances. Mueller's subpoena to Deutsche Bank may be aimed at exploring those claims. "Look, this is about Russian Federation".

He says he's confirmed "this with the bank and other sources".

Trump had liabilities of at least $130 million to Deutsche Bank Trust Company Americas, a unit of the German bank, according to a federal financial disclosure form released in June by the U.S. Office of Government Ethics.

In 2012, his Trump International Hotel Hotel and Tower in Chicago was loaned up to $640m, according to a property filing.

The Trump family's dealings with Deutsche Bank have been a focus of opponents for months.

Trump has consistently denied any collusion between his campaign and Russian Federation and has stated that he did not have any business dealings in Russian Federation.

"Deutsche Bank's pattern of involvement in money laundering schemes with primarily Russian participation, its unconventional relationship with the president, and its repeated violations of USA banking laws all raise serious question about whether the bank's reported reviews of the trading scheme and Trump's financial ties to Russia were completely thorough", they wrote.
