Microsoft plans to expand Redmond campus

Microsoft plans upgrade for Redmond headquarters

Microsoft is planning to overhaul its Redmond (Seattle), Washington campus in a multibillion-dollar operation that will take between five and seven years to complete.

The massive redesign will begin next year and encompasses 18 new buildings, $150 million in transportation infrastructure improvements, and almost 7 million square feet of renovations to existing workspace, Microsoft said. "When this project is complete, our main campus will be comprised of 131 buildings - including the equivalent of 180 [American] football fields of new and renovated space".

MICROSOFT LIKES big campuses and it can not lie, which is why its re-building its Seattle headquarters to fit in an extra 8,000 workers. It's also believed that 12 buildings will be knocked down and replaced with 18 buildings instead, many of which are double in height.

Microsoft today unveiled its plans for a major campus overhaul at its home, Redmond.

Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), meanwhile, has built over the last decade a dense, a high-rise urban campus that has completely transformed Seattle's South Lake Union neighborhood, and more recently, the northern edge of downtown. The layout of those buildings is so confusing that employees used to joke that finding an office was an intelligence test to see if you were fit to work at Microsoft.

With the announcement, Microsoft is seeking to match the workplace upgrades many of its biggest rivals are pursuing.

"We've focused on the cultural transformation of the company".

Microsoft announced the development to employees Tuesday evening. "We are not only creating a world-class work environment to help retain and attract the best and brightest global talent, but also building a campus that our neighbors can enjoy, and that we can build in a fiscally smart way with low environmental impact", Microsoft President Brad Smith outlined in an article.
