Cyber Monday 2017 Sets Now Sales Record

Is brick-and-mortar retail making a comeback

Adobe announced on Tuesday in its most recent report that Cyber Monday reached a new record of $6.6 billion in sales that makes it the largest online US sales day in history. As online-savvy businesses continue to gobble up more and more of the market share, companies like Macy's, JCPenney, Gap and Sears have suffered.

Both Black Friday and Thanksgiving online spending levels set new all-time records, according to Adobe.

It's also worth noting that many retail chains kicked off their Black Friday sales early in November.

With shoppers spending $5 billion in 24 hour on digital platforms, this year's Black Friday was record breaking, according to Adobe Digital Insights. Amid the tsunami of Black Friday stats that will be hurtling towards us over the next 48 hours, here's one to chill the blood - the Federal Bureau of Investigation received 203,086 background-check requests for gun purchases on Friday, up from 185,713 previous year, which was itself an all-time high.

Top sellout products: The items that sold out the quickest these holidays were accessories (29 percent), tops (20 percent), footwear (17 percent), dresses (8 percent) and bottoms (8 percent). Millennials are another reason for the dramatic growth in mobile devices, with 75 percent expected to shop on their smartphone. Based on Adobe Analytics data, Cyber Monday 2017 generated a record sales volume of $6.59 Billion. Adobe reports that mobile devices drove 54.3% of visits and 36.9% of revenue on Black Friday itself. Online retailers at first trailed behind traditional stores with only 3,625 establishments in 2001.

The modest drop, amid a big upswing in online sales, "illustrates that physical retail is still highly relevant and, when done right, profitable", a Shoppertrak spokesperson told CNBC. RetailNext, another analytics firm, said in-store foot.

ShopperTrak was optimistic for the holiday shopping season, since there are four Saturdays in December before Christmas.

The largest discounts on Cyber Monday were on toys with discounts averaging nearly 19%, followed by televisions with discounts averaging 16.5% and computers with average discounts of 14.7%. An order placed online but picked up in a store counts as a digital sale, but would the customer have still placed the order if the item could not have been picked up?
