Both hikes together led to a doubling of the Metro fares. It said there could be "other factors" like for example "in 2016 there was a ridership dip by 1.3 lakh from September to October in spite of no change in fare structure".

The DMRC fare hike effective from 10 October has led to a rise of around Rs10 for almost every distance slab.

The transporter said that a similar loss of ridership was witnessed a year ago also - of 1.3 lakh - between the months of September and October despite there being no fare hike.

Union minister for housing and urban affairs Hardeep Singh Puri on Saturday said the dip in metro's daily ridership in October couldn't be linked to the fare hike. "If need be I will raise the issue of fare hike at the Centre", he said. This came barely five months of another hike of up to 100 percent. "If people stop using it, then what goal does it serve", Mr Kejriwal tweeted. It said daily ridership had gone up in November, though it didn't share the figures.Metro's average daily ridership figure of 24.2 lakh in October was 3.2 lakh less than the September figure of 27.4 lakh, a drop of almost 12%.Fares have gone up by almost 100% across most slabs.

But the Minister clarified that when Delhi Metro fare increased, its impact was studied by taking in account data of at least two-three months. The metro now has 218-km network across Delhi-NCR.

On Friday, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), in its defence had said the loss can not exclusively be attributed to the fare hike and there were monthly variations noted throughout the year.

Till May, the metro transported around 28 lakh passengers daily. The passenger km per day in May was recorded 4,30,45,236 while in September it was 4,42,63,171.
