Toyota to consider selling locally-developed EVs in China

In February this year, the two companies had announced exploration of a business partnership after which they began discussing, among other topics, the dissemination of vehicle electrification technologies in India. In a statement, the two majors said they "have concluded a memorandum of understanding on moving forward in considering a cooperative structure for introducing EVs in the Indian market [by] around 2020".

Though Maruti Suzuki is the biggest carmaker in the country by some distance, its parent company Suzuki Motor Corp lacks the requisite technology to make electric cars.

Today, Maruti Suzuki is the leading vehicle brand in India and boasts a share of 47% in this market.

"Such activities encompass the establishment of charging stations, human resources development that includes training for after-service technicians employed throughout sales networks, and systems for the appropriate treatment of end-of-life batteries". India is the world's fifth biggest auto market, and auto companies see a lot of potential considering the Indian government's ambitious plans to convert the entire vehicle fleet in the country to electric by 2030.

Selling electric vehicles in China will mark the return of Toyota into the battery-powered vehicles market after halting production of the RAV4 EV in 2014.

The company is already in the process of setting up a battery manufacturing unit at its Gujarat plant for electric and hybrid cars by 2020, under a joint venture with Toshiba and Denso. "Suzuki, in turn, is expected to gain from Toyota's innovations in automated driving, artificial intelligence and low-emission vehicles", Reuters reports.

According to analysts, Suzuki being the market leader in India desperately needs an EV and cannott give away this opportunity to Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra. Toyota's joint venture partners in the China are FAW Group Corp and Guangzhou Automobile Group.
