Shepard Smith Defends Hillary Clinton Over Uranium Deal

Fox News anchor debunks network's 'Clinton uranium scandal' sparking fury

During Tuesday night's broadcast, Smith succinctly debunked Republicans' claims that the Obama administration and the Clinton-led State Department approved a deal allowing a Russian company to buy a Canadian company with mining interests in the USA in exchange for donations to the Clinton Foundation. "He gave $131 million to the Clinton Foundation".

Fox News anchor Shepard Smith infuriated a large number of the network's viewers on Tuesday after a six-minute segment in which he debunked far-right conspiracy theories about Hillary Clinton's alleged wrongdoing in a sale of American uranium.

'I feel like [Fox News is] actually CNN (fake news) when Shepard Smith is on, ' tweeted another viewer. "It could do neither", Smith said.

Several Republicans recently called for a special counsel in the case and this caused Smith to take a closer look at the Uranium One deal.

The day before Smith's takedown, Attorney General Jeff Sessions sent a letter to the House Judiciary Committee chairman stating the Department of Justice is looking at whether there is merit to investigating Clinton and the deal.

Republican lawmakers are pressing forward with an investigation into the 2010 sale of a Canadian uranium company, which owned 20 percent of USA uranium supplies, to a Russian government firm, despite five congressional inquiries having found no evidence of wrongdoing.

In addition, the State Department CFIUS seat was occupied not by her, but by Jose Fernandez, then-assistant secretary for economic, energy, and business affairs, who has said Clinton played no role in the decision.

The conspiracy theories around the Uranium One deal are nothing new. "She did not. A committee of nine evaluated the sale, the president approved the sale, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and others had to offer permits, and none of the uranium was exported for use by the U.S.to Russian Federation".

If prosecutors do appoint a special counsel, speculation could arise with regards to the independence of federal investigations under President Trump.

Hillary Clinton slammed President Trump and his administration for threatening to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate her over the Uranium One deal, saying the threats are a risky slippery slope that could lead to authoritarianism.

"This Uranium One story has been debunked countless times by members of the press, by independent experts".

CNN reports that hours after Smith's comments, Fox news host Sean Hannity used an elaborate chart on a in an attempt to "untangle the giant web of Clinton scandals and corruption".

"Shep is a friend, I like him, but he's so anti-Trump", said Hannity, who typically sides with the president.

The deal allowed for a Russian company to purchase a Canada-based company that mined uranium in the United States. "That is Uranium One".

The report said members of the committee, including Clinton, should have known about the investigation and it questioned why they would have approved it. He is an anchor on the network.
