Tensions rise in Zimbabwe as military tanks near the capital

Former Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa

General Constantine Chiwenga, the head of Zimbabwe's military, warned on Monday that troops would intervene if long-term political allies continued to suffer.

Before being ousted, Mnangagwa had clashed repeatedly with Mugabe's wife Grace, 52, who is widely seen as vying with Mnangagwa to be the next president when Mugabe dies.

The military spokesman was not available to comment. Whilst reports on social media seem to imply that a coup is underway, Khuluma Afrika understands that military presence has been increased there to improve security in the face of growing uncertainty in the country.

Mugabe is the world's oldest head of state, but his frail health has fuelled a bitter succession battle as potential replacements jockey for position.

Ninety-three year old President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe is in trouble.

"It is very unclear how this will play out and there is a certain amount of wishful thinking from those who would like to see Mugabe arrested or dragged off. but his silence suggests an executive which is not in charge of the situation", he added.

Addressing a press conference in the capital, Chiwenga, a perceived Mnangagwa loyalist, said the purges must stop.

"No one wants to see a coup".

Shooting near elementary school kills at least three; children among injured
About 100 students attend the school, which is the scene of one of the shootings that took place, according to an official. Tehama County officials are responding to a reported shooting near a school in Rancho Tehama , near Corning.

An official said, however, that Mugabe was going about his business as usual.

He said the army was prepared to act to end purges within Mr Mugabe's Zanu-PF party.

"His authority over the military has never been tested in this way".

Chiwenga said ZANU-PF had been hijacked by people who did not fight in the 1970s liberation war, a clear shot at G40 wing and Grace Mugabe who is a vocal critic of Mnangagwa.

"As a result of squabbling within the ranks of Zanu-PF, there has been no meaningful development in the country for the past five years".

Earlier this year the country was gripped by a freakish spat between Grace and Mnangagwa that included an alleged ice-cream poisoning incident that laid bare the pair's rivalry.

Chiwenga's remarks came after President Robert Mugabe last week fired Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa, his political ally for more than 40 years, on allegations of disloyalty and deceit.

Grace Mugabe - 41 years younger than her husband - has become increasingly active in public life in what many say is a process to help her eventually take the top job.
