GameStop's unlimited used game rental subscription gets shelved before it even started

GameStop halts its unlimited used game rental program

We feel this is the right thing to do for now to ensure we are able to provide our guests an exceptional service.

That means any in-store advertisements for PowerPass have been removed and put in storage until further notice.

Kotaku first reported the suspension of GameStop's PowerPass program. For $60 (which covered six months of the service), players could check out pre-owned GameStop games indefinitely.

Call of Duty: WW2 devs accidentally gave everyone double XP from launch
You save $10 over buying the DLC individually, you get a bonus and you may need to wait a long time for a deal. The problem here is that players are continually getting kicked off the game server thus adding to aggravation.

GameStop had delayed the launch of its recently announced PowerPass unlimited game rental service.

However, that is all in the past tense, because after a recent soft launch PowerPass has been suspended. Kotaku's sources claim that GameStop's antiquated computers weren't able to handle all of the programs requests, but isn't this something the company should have looked into before launching the service? And while your subscription is technically now over if you're one of those who signed up, it's not all bad news. However, according to the wording in the statement that GameStop provided, it appears that at least some customers have been given early access to the service. At the end of the six months, customers would be allowed to keep one of the games they had rented during that timespan.

GameStop's entrance into the game-rental market comes amid the company's continued financial difficulties. It is unclear when the program will return to GameStop for the public, if ever. They can bring the game they checked out back to GameStop for a full refund. In the meantime, one alternative would be Microsoft's Game Pass program, which gives Xbox owners access to 100 Xbox One and Xbox 360 games for $10 per month. The service soft-launched this week, so that could be where the issues were discovered.
