Ardern admits she may be seen as "an irritant" over Manus Island

Asylum seekers sit on the ground as they refuse to leave the Manus Island detention center in Papua New Guinea

The two leaders discussed New Zealand's longstanding offer to resettle 150 men from Australia's detention centres in Papua New Guinea and Nauru little more than a week ago.

The U.N. Human Rights Committee said on Thursday Australia should bring its migration laws into line with worldwide standards. "We made the offer because we saw a great need", she said. "They destroyed the rubbish bins where we have been collecting water too", said Behrouz Boochani, a Kurdish journalist from Iran who has been detained for more than four years.

"The safety of both the refugees and government workers plus staff of leading agencies is not to be taken for granted given the tension that is now being expressed by the locals on Manus Island", he said.

Activists have chained themselves to the gates of the Australian high commission in Wellington to highlight the plight of refugees and asylum-seekers on Manus Island.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has criticised Australia's handling of the escalating refugee crisis as the situation on Manus Island reaches fever pitch. "No matter what label you put on it there is absolute need and there is harm being done", Ardern said.

'I see the human face of this and I see the need and the role New Zealand needs to play.

But because it's still in the early stages of development, we'll probably have to wait several years for its release. However if the movie is successful, and with the brand recognition of Mario it should be, then more could be made.

These have raised human right issues until it was ruled as illegal and ordered to be shut down by the PNG Supreme Court. "I think it's clear that we don't see what's happening there as acceptable, that's why the offer's there".

Having already made the offer to Turnbull in person, Ardern said she would again raise the issue with him when they meet this week in the Philippines - on the sidelines of the Asean summit.

It is thought that a group of around 400 men - the majority of whom have refugee status - are now refusing to leave the facility, in defiance of Australian orders that they are relocated from the camp.

Newshub has also learned that New Zealand is upset at the Australian media's leaking of official intelligence on how boats have been stopped from coming to New Zealand.

But after Australia withdrew its support for the camp, control is going back to the PNG government.

But by the end of the day in Australia it was unclear what steps authorities would take next.
