Trump's Asia trip ends as it begins: shadowed by Russia

Manila - A day after being criticised by President Donald Trump, a former Central Intelligence Agency director questioned whether Russian President Vladimir Putin was manipulating Trump with flattery during the president's lengthy trip to Asia.

But first, the president's unintentionally comedic struggles went viral.

The instructions appeared to briefly confuse the US President, who used both of his hands to clasp the outstretched hand of Vietnam Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc - leaving Duterte with a spare hand.

'Give us your brightest smile, ' a master of ceremonies intoned as camera flashes popped.

The handshake chain is a set piece during the gathering of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) which met in Manila on Monday.

But Trump could not quite do that, nor could he muster the ritual greeting. The leaders were supposed to cross their arms to shake the hands of those standing next to them.

Trump's latest trick, on the final leg of a tour of Asia that included a fish feeding scandal in Japan, inspired the internet.

Musical.ly Sold for $1 Billion
The only Chinese social-media company to build a major network outside China will be taken over by a fast-growing Chinese upstart. Started by Zhang Yiming (張一鳴), it is on track to pull in about US$2.5 billion in revenue this year, largely from advertising.

In Brussels in May, Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron engaged in a jaw-clenching, face-tightening, knuckle-whitening handshake for six full seconds, with each man trying to claim the alpha status.

Trump's attendance at the ASEAN event will include bilateral sit-downs with Duterte, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Trump's trip was meant to be centred on trade and North Korea, and on Monday, he will talk with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who has overseen a bloody drug war that has featured extrajudicial killings.

Trump fumbled when it came to a carefully choreographed group photo with his fellow ASEAN leaders.

At the dinner, Duterte sang a hit Filipino love song, saying later it was "on the orders of U.S. President Donald Trump".

With German chancellor Angela Merkel Trump opted to use neither hand. "You people don't write that". "And I've really enjoyed being here".

With one day left on Trump's Asia trip before he returns to the United States, White House photographers are no doubt adjusting their apertures, eagerly awaiting the next greeting - be it fraught, symbolic or, as in this case, just downright and delightfully bungled.
