Korea, China mend ties, reaffirm efforts to denuclearize N. Korea

GETTY
WARGAMES South Koreans to host military drills with Trumps top warships

"The exercise is aimed at enhancing deterrence against North Korea's nuclear and missile threats and showing off preparedness to fend off any provocative acts by the North", a ministry spokesman said.

SEOUL-South Korea will join three USA aircraft carrier strike groups in a joint drill scheduled for November 11 to 14, the South's military said on Friday.

The aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan conducts joint drills with the South Korean navy at sea on October 19.

The first payoff is that the agreement offers assurances from Seoul that it recognizes China "strategic position in the region".

The military also said another objective of the drills was to "show off the determination for strong retaliation and the firm military readiness", and the ROK and US militaries' ability to "repulse any kind of provocations by North Korea with overwhelming military power in case of contingency".

The US warships will carry out air defense drills, sea surveillance, defensive air combat training and other training operations, the US Navy said.

A flurry of missile tests from North Korea this year have raised the likelihood of South Korea using the US-built Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) anti-missile system - something China has vehemently opposed.

The leaders also agreed to continue their discussions next month when the South Korean president will make a trip to China for their third bilateral summit, according to Cheong Wa Dae.

He said Friday the Asia-Pacific region was being held hostage by the "twisted fantasies" of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un, as he called on countries to stand united against Pyongyang.

President Trump is now on a tour of Asia that has taken him to Japan, South Korea and China so far.

China insists on peaceful denuclearization of North Korea.

Chinese President Xi Jinping met here Saturday with South Korean President Moon Jae-in and the two compared notes on bilateral ties and the Korean Peninsula situation.

But experts doubt China will take the kind of steps that Trump wants, such as halting crude oil exports to the North.
