Jerry Jones Doubles Down on Threats Over Goodell's Compensation

The political social and economic future of the NFL is in the hands of the owners as they are currently discussing whether to bring back the largely productive but publically ridiculed Roger Goodell

Jones, by the way, owns more than 100 Papa John's franchises.

Roger Goodell is "furious" that Jerry Jones and other owners are insisting that compensation on the National Football League commissioner's next contract be more performance-based and, even including incentives, would pay him roughly the same as his current deal, ESPN's "Outside the Lines" reported Thursday morning, citing an unidentified person who spoke recently with Goodell.

Jones maintains that he's ready to sue: claiming that he "has discovered a number of very concerning issues" about the negotiations and has "been unquestionably misled" by league compensation committee chairman and Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank.

Jones reportedly wants to change the way Goodell is paid, cranking up the incentives in his contract.

"He feels as if the owners have made a lot of money and he should be compensated accordingly", a source told ESPN. If Jones sues the league, things could even uglier, but it may not do him any good.

China Buys 300 Planes Worth $37 Billion from Boeing Co
China is the second largest market for aircrafts in the world, and now that market will mostly be controlled by Boeing . As of October 24, Boeing reported that they have 334 orders from unidentified customers with 290 of them for 737s.

However, by Thursday afternoon, the NFL was pushing back against OTL's narrative, as league spokesman Joe Lockhart told reporters Goodell isn't angry about the contract negotiations and that characterizing him as furious is "nonsense" and "nothing is further from the truth". Jones is one of the most powerful owners in the league, but he's in a battle he may struggle to win. Jones, who most recently hired Harvey Weinstein lawyer David Boies to aid his case against Goodell, has been lobbying his fellow billionaires for months about the commissioner's upcoming contract - which has seemed an inevitability but still not finalized.

Why it matters: Goodell's current contract runs through 2018, and while he's been the subject of controversy throughout his tenure, he was expected to ink a five-year extension with little debate. With Boies' help, Jones is trying to move the other owners toward his side; Jones needs 24 owners to approve of Goodell's firing.

The extension would carry through 2024.

After Jones's conference call last week, the six owners revoked his status as an ad hoc member of the compensation committee, which decides on pay packages for the top league officials. "I don't know where it is coming from".

Adding to the Goodell-Jones collision has been the never-ending Ezekiel Elliott saga, in which the commissioner suspended the star Dallas running back for six games under the NFL's conduct umbrella for a domestic violence case in which charges were never pressed. Thanks to that, it is another week of more reports stating there's a rift between Jerry Jones and Roger Goodell.
