School honors Veterans with program

Students at St. Mark Catholic School had a special type of show and tell Thursday in honor of Veterans Day

Students and staff will hear from Afghanistan veteran Ryan Portela.

11, the United States will celebrate Veterans Day to honor the nation's service men and women.

Pettyjohn said the Veterans Day assembly is important, "giving students exposure to something they wouldn't normally see".

"Kids should really know why we have the freedoms we have today, and I know that is one thing that was opening to my eyes today when I walked around and talked to all the various veterans", Book said.

"We've got parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, uncles".

Staley High School has held the event every year since their opening in 2008.

Sharon Webb, a military flight nurse who works at the Martinsburg Veterans Affairs Medical Center, was the guest speaker for the hour-long program, which featured performances of patriotic music by the school's seventh- and eighth-grade chorus, strings and band.

"It means honoring those who protect our country and everyone in it", said Mason Saari, 5th grader at Ishpeming Schools.

Teacher Sarah Norwood says, "We invite local area veterans to come in and share their stories of time in service".

The children showed they had been learning some basic skills by presenting an enthusiastic rendition of the Pledge of Allegiance.

Students said they have been preparing for the day's events for months. The Norman Park Elementary Choir sang songs about America and gave handwritten letters of thanks to the veterans in attendance.
