"As a journalist, Danica Roem has covered the issues critical to Virginians and listened to a wide range of perspectives", said Virginia House Democratic Caucus Leader David J. Toscano and Caucus Chair Charnielle Herring in a released statement.

In 1992 a transgender woman was voted into the Massachusetts House, but didn't disclose her gender identity until after she was elected.

What's more? She ousted the previous delegate, Robert G. Marshall, an 11-term self-proclaimed "chief homophobe", who throughout the campaign, misgendered Roem and referred to her using male pronouns. Instead, she focused on jobs, schools and, with particular fervor, northern Virginia's traffic congestion.

"To every person who has ever been singled out, who has ever been stigmatized, who has ever been the misfit, who's ever been the kid in the corner, who's ever needed someone to stand up for them when they didn't have a voice of their own because there is no one else with them, this one is for you", she told her supporters Tuesday night.

Roem, a Democrat, defeated Republican incumbent Bob Marshall who proposed a bill restricting which bathrooms transgender people could use and attempted to block Virginia from adding sex and gender discrimination to anti-discrimination rules.

On the campaign trail, Marshall and other Republicans repeatedly misidentified Roem's gender.

Pulwama encounter: Three terrorists, Army jawan killed in gunbattle
IGP Kashmir zone, Muneer Khan said: "We will ask Pakistan to collect the body of Masood Azhar's nephew as JeM has owned it". One of the terrorists killed in the Pulwama encounter was the nephew of Jaish-e-Mohammad chief, Maulana Masood Azhar .

She also talked about her transition and said: "I started transitioning while working at the newspaper in 2012, began hormone replacement therapy December 3, 2013, changed my name, gender and byline in 2015 and no one cared".

Marshall conceded to Roem in a post on his Facebook page.

Roem wasn't the only transgender candidate elected Tuesday. "Though we all wish tonight would have turned out differently, I am deeply grateful for your support and effort over the years". She was a reporter at the Gainesville Times for 9 years (plus 2 months and 2 weeks, to be exact) before running for office, and also worked as a news editor for the Montgomery County Sentinel in Maryland. Tyler Titus, who is openly transgender, won a seat on a western Pennsylvania school board.

Roem becomes the state's first transgender politician - and the first openly transgender official to serve in the nation.

'2017 will be remembered as the year of the trans candidate - and Danica's heroic run for office the centerpiece of that national movement, ' said Aisha C. Moodie-Mills, president & CEO of Victory Fund, in a statement.
