Terzo Millennio is a self-healing EV concept from Lamborghini and MIT

So, what do you think about the Lamborghini Terzo Millennio? It's been created in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Lamborghini calls its collaboration with the Boston-based Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) "an important page in the future of the super sports auto for the third millennium".

And there is more innovation under the car's skin: a fully digital cockpit and a Pilot Driving simulation module, which allows the driver to be taken around a track such as Imola by a virtual expert before the driver takes over to feel like a "pilot" himself, are other features of the Terzo Millennio concept vehicle. A snarling V12 petrol engine is notable by its absence, but you can bet on any future electric Lamborghini being fearsomely fast regardless.

The technological goal of the project is to enable Lamborghini to address the future of the super sports auto in five different dimensions: energy storage systems, innovative materials, propulsion system, visionary design, and emotion. More on this in a bit. Anastasios John Hart, Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology conceived and developed energy storage system and material science. Mircea Dinca, Department of Chemistry and "Mechanosynthesis Group", led by Prof.

At first glance, the results are fairly spectacular.

Trading batteries for supercapacitors and lightweight aluminum with self-healing, energy-storing carbon fiber, the Terzo Millennio is full of pie-in-the-sky technology promises, but its declaration is clear: some future Lamborghinis will run exclusively on electrons.

The Terzo Millenio has an electric motor at each wheel, with all-wheel remaining one of Lamborghini's signatures. Sensors in the body, which could be used as an energy storage medium, could detect cracks that could be filled immediately through small internal tubes - granted they were small enough. The concept was unveiled as a part of MIT's EmTech conference.

Lamborghini said the Terzo Millennio is all-wheel-drive, with electric motors driving each individual wheel, allowing for highly precise torque vectoring. In addition to turning the body of the Millennia into an "accumulator for energy storage", the carbonfibre construction will help keep weight very low. Of course, building a super vehicle that can run on batteries is no easy task.

Lamborghini is the process of tinkering with some wild technology too.

The company is aiming to move away from conventional batteries and so is investigating the potential of equipping the Terzo Millennio with supercapacitors.

As company CTO, Maurizio Reggiani responded to the inevitable question about timeline: 'I can not tell you when - there are some components that are closer to industrialisation than others, ' he said.
