AMD, Intel Team Up To Take On Nvidia In Gaming Laptops

Intel, AMD Team up for the First Time Since the 80s to Take on Nvidia

Size comparison between a standard implementation of discrete GPU and CPU on a laptop against the upcoming 8th Gen Intel Core processor with semi-custom AMD Radeon chip and HBM2 memory.

"Together we are offering gamers and content creators the opportunity to have a thinner-and-lighter PC capable of delivering discrete performance-tier graphics experiences in AAA games and content creation applications", said Scott Herkelman, vice president and general manager of AMD Radeon Technologies Group, in a press release. Nevertheless, Intel did pointed out that the new processor is combination of Intel Core H-series CPU together with a semi-custom AMD Radeon GPU.

The upcoming chip will be part of Intel's 8th-generation Intel Core family and will start shipping in next year's first quarter to laptop vendors. Intel's new product give it a shot at some of the revenue that usually goes to those graphics chips, while generating new sales for AMD and muscling in on Nvidia's dominance in graphics units.

Houston Astros' shortstop Carlos Correa proposes to girlfriend during World Series celebration
I'm glad Plan A worked because I didn't have a plan B, ' he said with a laugh. "I honestly was (surprised)", Rodriguez said. I just burst into tears. "It would have been a good story if I said I had it through the whole game", Correa said.

"This joint project to create a lower-power gaming chip is fascinating and shows just how serious Intel is in bringing innovation to the space", said Patrick Moorhead, president and principal analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy. The ultimate goal here is to reduce the height of systems that now use Intel Core H-series processors in addition to higher-powered discrete graphics solutions. Most thin and light laptops only have a CPU, as they can handle basic graphics pretty well, but GPUs are required for more power-hungry tasks, like gaming or video editing. Laptops that run on Intel and AMD's new chip will sell in the "neighborhood of $1,200 to $1,400 apiece", according to PCWorld.

"At the heart of this new design is EMIB, an intelligent bridge that allows heterogeneous silicon to quickly pass information in extremely close proximity". If that wasn't enough, Intel also announced that it is bundling the design with the latest high-bandwidth memory, HBM2. Rather than all the components within one die, as is the case with AMD's APUs, the Intel package features multiple chips combined through the package substrate.

AMD shares rose 6 percent after Monday's market open, while Intel's stock trickled up 0.5 percent. This bridge allows the chips to not be only smaller but also more powerful. "We're opening the door for thinner, lighter devices across notebooks, 2 in 1s and mini desktops, while delivering incredible performance and graphics for enthusiasts", shared Walker. Or you could choose performance with the Intel H-series processors and a dGPU.
