Japanese company gives non-smokers six days off to compensate for cigarette breaks

More firms introducing anti-smoking measures

"The company is willing to take an even tougher anti-smoking measure in the future", said a public relations officer.

Japanese companies are encouraging its employees to quit smoking by providing the facility of six additional leaves. Because smokers and nonsmokers would still leave work for the day at the same time, nonsmokers started complaining. The company's offices are on the 29th floor, but the smoking area is in the building's basement, meaning employees are away on breaks for up to 15 minutes at a time.

"One of our nonsmoking staff put a message in the company suggestion box earlier in the year saying that smoking breaks were causing problems", a spokesman for the company told The Telegraph. This is mostly because I once had a job where I worked with a close friend who was a smoker and I couldn't resist this acceptable way of taking mini-vacations throughout the day for a quick chat with her.

After hearing about the complaint, the company's CEO, Takao Asuka, chose to give nonsmoking employees time off to compensate.

"We don't give punishment for smoking", Matsushima said.

Puigdemont skips court appearance, but will cooperate with authorities - lawyer
It was as yet unknown why their hearings were adjourned by the court, which deals with cases involving lawmakers. The move follows last week's vote by the parliament of Catalonia to declare independence from Spain .

Many Japanese firms are encouraging their workers to quit smoking, especially as the 2020 Summer Olympics draw near.

Chief Asuka also said that he hopes to "encourage employees to quit smoking through incentives rather than penalties or coercion.so far, four employees have quit".

According to the World Health Organization, 21.7 percent of Japanese smoke. The figure is higher among males and older generations. However, in Japan, smoking is banned at work places and a common smoking room is constructed for employees to smoke only in that common room.

The country's smoking laws confine most outdoor smoking to designated areas, and it is banned on the street, but most restaurants and bars still allow it. India is leading at the 4 position in terms of the maximum cigarettes consumption.
