Nintendo Switch sells 7.6 million units worldwide

Nintendo Predicts Switch Shipments to be 16.74 Million by March 31st Forecast Sharpy Increased

The company raised their initial 65 bn Yen estimate to 120 bn Yen following a boost in console production.

Operating profit came in at ¥40 billion, reversing a year-earlier operating loss, while revenue was ¥374.0 billion - almost triple last year's level. To put that in perspective, the Wii U only sold 13.56 million over its entire lifetime.

But Nintendo's core business is still going strong.

Nintendo reports 23.8 billion yen perating profit and 220 billion yen in revenue for the July-September quarter, with a net profit of 30.2 billion yen.

Overall, Nintendo recorded total sales valued at 374 billion yen, with overseas sales accounting for 272 billion yen or 73 percent of the total. Through the end of September, the company has sold/shipped 7.63 million Switch units worldwide. That's not bad considering the system had been out for just six months at that point. Most online retailers are carrying the console regularly for about 10,000 yen more than the suggested retail price of 29,980 yen.

Given Nintendo has persistently struggled to keep enough Switch console on the physical and virtual shelves, the achievement is even more marked.

Ahead of the holiday season, Nintendo is promising more Switch consoles on store shelves.

"We've boosted Switch production in order to meet strong demand from our customers as it was hard for customers to buy the consoles at retail stores", said Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima (via Engadget).

Before launching the Switch in March, Nintendo found itself losing gaming enthusiasts to Sony's PlayStation 4, which boasts lifelike graphics, and smartphones, which can be played anywhere. Motion sensors in the controllers direct in-game movements.

We can now all stop wondering why Nintendo would not publicly announce such a feature though, as Fils-Aime said that the addition of GameCube controller support to the Nintendo Switch "was as much a surprise to us as it was to consumers".

Nintendo's Switch has done better than just about anybody could have predicted - especially considering how dismally the Wii U performed.

The Switch, on the other hand, has new titles released every one to two months for popular series.

Helping with Nintendo's solid sales of its Switch console have been top-selling titles for Nintendo's software, which include top-ranking title: "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild". There has been some skepticism on the fact that the work necessary to enable third-party accessories was also exactly what was needed to add GameCube controller support to the Nintendo Switch. Gamers can expect to encounter "new experiences", he said.
