Worldwide airlines flying from the Middle East to the United States have been asked by American security officials that of Thursday, pre-screening interviews be added to security procedures on flights from certain Arab airports to the United States.

The new measures began on Thursday.

The checks being done at Changi and other airports aim to increase security without widening an in-cabin ban on laptops and other large electronic devices that was imposed on selected flights earlier this year.

The TSA gave first notice of the new guidelines in June.

Airlines were given 120 days to comply with the new rules.

Foreign airlines are anxious passenger interviews will slow down the security and boarding process.

Many worldwide airlines had concerns about the new regulations.

Passengers flying with Emirates will have to take part in "pre-screening interviews at the check-in counter", whereas Air France will be issuing questionnaires to its US-bound customers, according to The Guardian.

Some airlines, such as Cathay Pacific Airways, are going to stop allowing passengers to do self check-ins and self-bag drops for flights headed to America.

"We therefore advise all passengers travelling to the U.S. to arrive at the airport three hours prior to departure to ensure they can proceed through all airport checkpoints in good time", Cathay Pacific said on a website posting.

Alexandre de Juniac, CEO of the International Air Transport Association, expressed concern over the American government's actions. We have a pre-boarding security check for passengers on USA flights. "That is something that is very concerning and disturbing".

At their annual meeting in Taipei, Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) members passed a resolution calling for security measures to be risk-based, outcome-focused and proportionate to the probable threat.

USA authorities in June also ordered increased security around aircraft and in passenger areas, and other places where travelers can be cleared by US officials before they depart and ordered enhanced screening of personal electronic devices.
