North Korea issued a strong warning to countries at the United Nations on Monday, stating that the countries all across the globe will be safe from retaliation unless they join the United States in military action against the Pyongyang.

A high-ranking North Korean official says the country's development of nuclear weapons is necessary because of the threat posed by the United States and contends the nuclear program is for deterrence.

He said the US can forestall war through unified and consistent rhetoric, increased cooperation with key global players and a focus on increasing diplomatic and military capacity to properly address North Korea.

It comes the US Navy started military drills near the Korean Peninsula with its aircraft carrier strike group and nuclear-powered submarine yesterday.

Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I.), ranking member of the Armed Services Committee, called the escalating war of words between President Donald Trump and North Korea Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un a threat to diplomacy.

Over the weekend, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that if diplomatic efforts fail between the Governments of North Korea and the United States, then the "military option will be the only one left". Russian President Vladimir Putin said his country is curtailing economic, scientific and other ties with North Korea in line with United Nations sanctions, and the European Union announced new sanctions as well.
