Al Michaels sorry for 'Sunday Night Football' Weinstein joke

NBC play-by-play man Al Michaels made a joke during Sunday Night Football that was in poor taste.

'I mean, let's face it.

Michaels mused in the middle of the third quarter of the game between the New York Giants and Denver Broncos that the Giants were "coming off a worse week than Harvey Weinstein".

Cris Collinsworth, who was Michaels' broadcast partner for the night, shared an awkward chuckle and tried to redirect the conversation immediately having sensed how inappropriate the joke was.

"All you have to do is read the papers - any paper", Michaels responded. "Any paper", added Michaels.

A number of actresses have come forward and accused Weinstein of rape and sexual harassment which has also seen the organisation behind the Oscars expel the Hollywood producer.

Several deaths and serious illness have been tied directly to the alleged ring, US authorities said. Investigators identified more than 100 distributors in the alleged scheme.

"Sorry I made a reference earlier".

'It was not meant in that manner.

"Will do, move on", replied Collinsworth. He has never been known to be provocative on the air.

It didn't go over well and there was immediately backlash on social media. "So, my apologies. And we'll just leave it at that", Michaels said.

'Did that really just happen?'

Michaels should have known better and hopefully he won't be making any ill-advised comments like this again. "The Giants are coming off a worse week than Harvey Weinstein and they're up 14 points", he said, referencing recent season-ending injuries to three players along with another player's suspension.
