Sean Hughes dead: Irish comedian dies, aged 51

BREAKING NEWS: Comedian Sean Hughes who starred in Never Mind the Buzzcocks dies aged 51 just a week after writing on Twitter that he was 'in hospital'

It's believed that he was admitted for liver cirrhosis and suffered cardiac arrest this morning.

Hughes, who was a team captain on the popular United Kingdom music-based comedy quiz show "Never Mind the Buzzcocks" between 1996 and 2002, also briefly starred his own sitcom "Sean's Show" on Channel 4.

Hughes became one of the youngest comedians to win the Perrier Comedy Award, which he was awarded in 1990 aged 25. He also appeared in the TV series Casualty.

Actor and stand-up Aisling Bea wrote that Hughes was a "wonderfully silly, anarchic & hilarious comic" and said she "enjoyed the mad tangents our conversations would take". A brilliant comic and a lovely bloke.

Taking to Twitter to comment on his passing, comedian Al Murray said: "Terribly sad news about Sean Hughes".

And Richard Herring simply shared: "Sean Hughes".

Irvine Welsh added, "Sad to hear about Sean Hughes".

He was also a team captain on the BBC 2 comedy quiz show Never Mind the Buzzcocks, from 1996 to 2002, alongside Phill Jupitus and Mark Lamarr.

Hughes is survived by his two brothers, Alan and Martin.
